    History
Prior to the Norman Conquest, the town was once held by Edwin, Earl of Mercia.
Following this period many members of the royal family owned the manor which was one of their largest and most important manors in Lincolnshire.

The town developed around two main areas, these being the Church & the Market Place. The Market Place is believed to date back to medieval times where weekly markets and fairs were held. Kirton developed quickly in the 18th Century with many new buildings being constructed.

In 1897 the Town Hall was built in the market place built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee using the stone salvaged from the prison in 1789.

The churchman John Kelsey was the town's first Baptist minister. He was arrested & sent for trial for preaching non-conformist views in 1663.
