Richard Hornsby was born in Elsham in Lincolnshire (now North Lincolnshire) on June 4th 1790. He lived with a farming family.

He came to Grantham in 1810. He set up Seman & Hornsby with his business partner, Richard Seaman, a fellow methodist. The firm became Richard Hornsby & Sons in 1828. The company made ploughs and seed drills. By 1840, the company made steam engines, which were used for traction engines in the 1850s. These were used for harvesting crops.

He died in 1864.

His firm went on to invent the caterpillar track in 1905.
